RIP Sandi Durrell, Founder/Publisher/Editor of TheaterPizzazz

We at NiteLife Exchange are saddened by the death of Sandi Durell on October 22 after a valiant fight with cancer. Our heartfelt condolences go out to family, friends and colleagues.

Sandi was the Founder/Publisher/Editor of TheaterPizzazz.com. In fifteen or so years , Sandi grew the publication through her hard work and dedication, also serving as a writer and reviewer herself, as well as an advocate and strong voice in the worlds of  theater, cabaret and entertainment. She was a Voting Member of the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards and member of the American Theatre Critics Association.

Prior to establishing Theater Pizzazz, Sandi had a career as a vocalist-performer and was an event producer. She also formed a partnership with  theater produced Shari Upbin. Their Sharell Productions created many revues, including Broadway and Hollywood Live! and Timeless Divas!

Sandi also produced the Songwriter Showcase for the American Popular Song Society (of which she was a Board member) for 19 years and the benefit CD Our Heart Sings. She was a producer on the Award-winning film Broadway the Golden Age (with the late Rick McKay). Many other affiliations included the League of Professional Theatre Women, Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU – Advisory Board), the Dutch Treat Club and The Lambs.

Originally from Brooklyn, Sandi attended Abraham Lincoln High School and studied at Brooklyn College.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert Durrell and daughter, radio personality, Cooper Lawrence.

Services/celebration of life are this Sunday, October 27 at noon at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, 630 Amsterdam Avenue. As per Sandi’s daughter, Cooper Lawrence’s wishes, those who wish to attend should dress in bright colors. “My mom would have hated everyone in black crying.”
