Remembering Mabel Mercer: Phillip Officer in Concert

By Marcia Blondin***Phillip Officer is a talented actor and singer known for his versatile performances across various mediums. With a rich background in theater, film and music, Officer has captivated audiences with his dynamic stage presence and powerful vocal abilities. His collaborations often reflect his artistic values and commitment to storytelling. Fans appreciate his talent, authenticity and connection to the material he performs; and over the years, he has built a commendable career that showcases his commitment to the performing arts.

In addition to his acting career, Officer is well-recognized for his contributions to music. He has released several recordings that feature a blend of genres, showcasing his versatility as a performer. His acting ability was abundantly clear the second his dapper self entered the Casa Karma Red Room in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for his show You Fascinate Me So, in tribute to Mabel Mercer, who recorded that song in 1960.

He sits for most of the performance in his tribute to Mercer, as she did, offering her interpretation of her material in parlando. She  was not merely a vocalist, and neither is Officer. Following in Mercer’s footsteps, he  emphasizes the lyrics with his voice, face, and minute body movements, insisting you listen carefully. With musical director, Mark Hartman, the duo performed You Fascinate Me So in New York recently, so the synchronicity was lovely.

With each new project, Officer reminds audiences of the power of storytelling through acting and song, leaving a lasting impression on all who experience his work in the intimate art of cabaret.
