The New York Times has printed a delightful article about cabaret royalty, Steve Ross, in today’s edition (December 14, 2018). Entitled, “The Last of the Old-School Cabaret Artists,” the in-depth interview unlocks the history of New York City cabaret from the 1960s and Ross’ place in it. It’s a great read—essential for anyone who’s a fan of Ross and/or cabaret.
In case you don’t know, Ross is a singer-pianist who’s been dubbed the “Crown Prince of New York Cabaret.” He’s an articulate man with a keen knowledge of the Great American Songbook’s music and history. He has hosted radio series and outdoor concerts. He conducts workshops and Master Classes and appears on the programs of Vocal Ease, a volunteer organization wherein performers contribute their time and talents in senior centers around New York City. Ross has performed around the country and around the world in every kind of venue – from Rio de Janeiro to Sydney, from Carnegie Hall to Lincoln Center and from cabarets to theaters. some might (rightly) say Steve Ross is a National Treasure.
