Pop-up Broadway/TV Costume Exhibit Will Open in Times Square on Thursday, August 5

A new pop-up exhibit, featuring costumes from film, television and Broadway, will open in Times Square, running from Thursday, August 5 through Sunday, September 26. Displays will include costumes from Aladdin, The Cher Show, Frozen, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Lion King, Moulin Rouge!, Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked, as well as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” James Bond: No Time to Die, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Walt Disney World, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Ringling Bros. and more.

Proceeds from the exhibit will benefit The Costume Industry Coalition‘s Recovery Fund. The group was started in the wake of the pandemic in 2020 to advocate for the survival of New York City’s custom costume industry. Under the spotlight will be not only the costumes themselves but revelations about the their contributions to the entertainment industry, including the hundreds of costuming experts who create, supply and care for them.

The exhibit was designed by Thinc Design, at a site formerly occupied by Modell’s. The 20,000 square foot space will be transformed into an immersive maze featuring more than 100 of the industry’s most beautiful and complex garments. As guests make their way through the exhibit, they will get to see up close the detail and craftsmanship typically only seen far away on stage or screen. Costume makers and experts will be on-site demonstrating their techniques and skills and interacting with guests; multimedia elements will provide a rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the process.

The exhibit space is located at 234 West 42nd Street; to purchase tickets, click here.
