By Magda Katz***The internationally beloved ensemble Pink Martini brought its unique blend of jazz, classical and world music to the beautiful Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, FL. Now in its 35th year, Pink Martini was founded by the extraordinary musician Thomas Lauderdale, who, on piano, mesmerized the audience with his dynamic playing and charm. The delight continued with a vibrant blend of musical styles and with a joyful stage presence, showcasing the group’s signature multilingual repertoire and the remarkable vocal talents that have helped make the band a global favorite.
Opening the show was vocalist Jimmie Herrod, whose angelic voice immediately captivated the audience. His stirring rendition of the song “Exodus” set a reverent and emotional tone for the evening. Herrod’s soaring vocals and effortless control filled the hall, earning enthusiastic applause and establishing the high musical standard that would carry throughout the performance. Leading much of the evening’s program was the dynamic Storm Large, whose powerful stage presence and expressive voice brought drama, humor and intensity to Pink Martini’s eclectic songbook. Large moved effortlessly between musical styles, demonstrating the versatility that has made her such a compelling front woman for the ensemble.
Large also delivered a memorable performance of “Ich Dich Liebe,” a song from a 1964 spaghetti western originally sung by the legendary Mamie Van Doren. Large’s dramatic interpretation highlighted her powerful voice and theatrical flair, perfectly suited to the song’s cinematic style. She added a delightful and unexpected moment during the performance when she took out her phone and played a recording of Van Doren herself singing the tune; at 95 years old, Van Doren is still going strong, and the moment served as both a nod to classic Hollywood and a charming bridge between generations of performers.
Also featured on vocals was Timothy Nishimoto, whose smooth and engaging performances added another layer of warmth and charm to the concert. Together, this trio of vocalists created a rich tapestry of sound that perfectly complemented the sophisticated arrangements of Pink Martini’s musicians. Throughout the evening, Pink Martini delivered the cosmopolitan musical experience for which they are known—blending elements of jazz, Latin rhythms, pop standards and international melodies. The performance felt both intimate and grand, inviting the audience on a musical journey across cultures and eras.
The evening soon transformed into a joyful celebration. What began as a concert evolved into a full-fledged party as audience members were encouraged to join Pink Martini on stage to dance. The atmosphere in the hall became electric, with the performers and audience sharing the same exuberant energy. By the end of the night, the excitement reached its peak as concertgoers formed a lively conga line that wound its way down the aisles and up onto the stage. Singing, dancing and laughing together with the band, the audience became part of the performance itself. It was an unforgettable evening—less a traditional concert and more a communal celebration of music. Pink Martini once again proved that their performances are not simply shows, but truly unique concert experiences that bring audiences together in pure joy.
