Rising star pianist Isaiah J. Thompson, recently making waves in the jazz scene with his unique sound and virtuosic playing, will celebrate the release of his first live album, The Power of the Spirit, at Dizzy’s Club on Thursday, March 16 and Friday, March 17, with sets at 7:30 and 9:30 PM both days. Performing tunes from the album live, Thompson will be joined by Julian Lee (tenor saxophone), Russell Hall (bass) and Miguel Russell (drums).
Thompson has performed with an array of jazz legends including Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Steve Turre, John Pizzarelli and Buster Williams. Thompson originally came to Marsalis’ attention when he was a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra nearly a decade ago. Since then, he’s developed his artistry at the Juilliard School and on the stages of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The Power of the Spirit was captured in front of a rapturous audience at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club, with the quartet delivering a locked-in performance of their repertoire, which includes original material with a gospel-inflected sound, and a nod to forebears like Bobby Timmons, Phineas Newborn Jr. and Cedar Walton.
Two singles have already been released from the album: “The IT Department,” a play on Thompson’s initials, and a tribute to his father. The second release is entitled “Tales of the Elephant and the Butterfly.” Thompson has also performed an NPR “Tiny Desk” concert, on a “Jazz Night in America’s” Youngblood series episode, and made a special guest appearance on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s Handful of Keys.
