Downtown supper-club Pangea is gearing up for events coming up this Fall with a number of shows from some of its signature artists that remind us how important it is to treat each other with dignity and fairness. The East Village venue presents premieres by Tammy Faye Starlite, Salty Brine, and Rachelle Garniez. And special encores by Raquel Cion, Sidney Myer and Jeremy Lawrence.
Bay Area-based playwright and performer John Fisher makes his Pangea debut with the return of his solo play A History of World War II: The D-Day Invasion to the Fall of Berlin – Live Onstage! seen last year at United Solo (winner Best Actor), with an encored at this year’s festival. Written and performed by Fisher, the piece looks at familiar events through the eyes of artists, gays and Jews to give a humanized look at the devastation of geo-political conflict on the lives of ordinary people. Two nights only: Friday, September 28 and Friday, October 5, both at 7 pm. Cover is $25.
Country singer Tammy Faye, aka Tammy Faye Starlite offers She Comes in Colors covering the once-maligned, but now re-assessed, Stones studio experiment Their Satanic Majesties Requestand follows up on her other Stones unturnings. She’s backed by her regular mates, Keith Hartel, Richard Feridun, Ron Metz, David Nagler and Jared Michael Nickerson. She Comes in Colors plays all Thursdays in October — 4, 11, 18, 25, all at 7 pm. Cover is $25.
Pangea resident artist Salty Brine returns with a brand new multi-genre performance. As yet untitled, this new invention mixing theatre, musicals and nightclub is the next installment of his Living Record Collection, a series of shows that cross-pollinate famous rock and pop albums with literary works and Salty’s own personal journey on the high seas of life. This 18th show in the series will be the fifth show immersively staged at Pangea. The next installment Living Record Collection performs on Wednesdays, Octoober 10 & 24, Thursday, November 29, Thursday, December 13, all at 7 pm. Cover is $20
Back by popular demand—Sidney Myer is Live at Pangea! The raconteur, who is as old-school as he is au courant, performs with his everyman persona, deft turn of phrase and easy way with the arcana of American cabaret. Music direction is by Tracy Stark. Two nights only, and sure to be n early sell-out. Monday, October 15 and Sunday, October 21, both at 7 pm. Cover is $20.
Raquel Cion is back with Me and Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie for six encore performances. Written and performed by Cion, directed by Cynthia Cahill, with music director Karl Saint Lucy on piano, this time and dimension-traveling evening is propelled by a lifetime of “soul love” between the Brooklyn-based performer and David Jones. Cion, backed by a four-piece combo, explores deep cuts of Bowie’s diverse catalog as she conemplates her destiny, fathoming mid-life, cancer and beyond. Friday and Saturday, October 19 & 20; Friday and Saturday, Novemer 16 & 17, all at 9:30 pm. Cover is $20.
In observance of the two-year anniversary of the US election, Jeremy Lawrence redeploys his Lavender Songs — A Queer Weimar Berlin Cabaret an evocation of Weimar Berlin’s queer underground as it faced imminent danger. Directed by Jason Jacobs, the show premiered in November 2016 and was extended twice in 2017. Mondays, October 22 and 29, and Novemer 5, all at 7 pm. Cover is $20.
The 2018 Bistro Award-winning singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and storyteller, Rachelle Garniez, performs an evening of originals dedicated to her hometown—a little burg we call New York. Filled with tales and tunes inspired by childhood memories, days spent street-corner busking and meditations on all the glitter and grime, NYC Serenades plays on Wednesday, Septemer 26 and Tuesday, October 23, both at 7 pm. Cover is $20.
Mad Jenny (Jenny Lee Mitchell), Aldo Perez and Matt Kanelos continue an extended run of the new late-night lounge show they’ve co-conceived called Jazz Bastards, which launched in August. This immersive hipster honkytonk blends touches of vaudeville and free-form jazz. The combo-cast includes Big Apple Circus clown Glen Heroy, and the acrobatically inclined drummer Nick Parker, with Perez on guitars and vocals; Kanelos on piano and Mad Jenny on clarinet. Jazz Bastards plays on the last Friday of the month: September 28, October 26, November 30 and December 28, all at 9:30 pm. Cover is $15.
