Natasha Castillo: The kinda feel good show we all definitely need right now!

By Scott Barbarino***Many of us in this trade/cottage industry wear many hats as we create, produce and promote. I certainly have hung my many hats on many hooks in many places. As someone who has seen hundreds of shows over the last four decades, today I will don my reviewer’s cap.  For total transparency Natasha Castillo is a contributor to NiteLifeExchange, which I publish and I couldn’t be prouder to have her column Through the Lens of Natasha as a part of our online news and reviews website.

With that said, knowing Natasha for many years now I also couldn’t be prouder of her for what is quite simply imagining and creating a truly magnificent show called That’s My Music—Growing Up with the Carpenters that she’s been presenting at Don’t Tell Mama. I’ve seen it twice now and plan on seeing it again on  Monday November 18 at 7 PM. If you haven’t seen Natasha Castillo’s Carpenter’s show join me for my third dose of the kinda feel good show we all definitely need right now!

Sequined top shining rays of light from the stage, Castillo opened her show with a gentle mash up of “Without A Song” and “Yesterday Once More” with a twist/surprise I won’t reveal. The rest of the show rolls joyfully from one hit to another.

Thank you to Natasha’s Mom who was a Taiwanese pop artist and who played The Carpenters on repeat when Natasha was growing up. Her sharing with Natasha and making her the fan girl that she is created these moments of great music and great memories for me of my youth. Ya couldn’t not like the vibe and the music of The Carpenters in the ’70s at least not where I grew up.

The show is a  truly collaborative effort in which Director, Lennie Watts weaved magic in its simplicity. Musical Director Ted Stafford (vocals, amp, guitar) and Don Kelly (percussion) were finely-honed musically, working tightly with Natasha creating really wonderful harmonies that complimented the sweetness of Natasha’s sound.

Absorb these lyrics in 2024: Can’t we stop hurting each other/Gotta stop hurting each other/Making each other cry/Breaking each other’s heart/Tearing each other apart.
