By Scott Barbarino***My Ex Husband’s Funeral: a show by Lisa Ellex in its infancy and just getting up on its feet, is already pretty fantastic and funny. It’s being developed at Don’t Tell Mama, and right now you should rush to see it. You’ve got two chances to do that, on Saturday’s January 17 and 24. Click here to check it out. You’ll want to say you saw it when.
I saw its first performance (last Saturday) and already it is totally evident and clear the show is only going to get better and better. All the ingredients are here already: a well-written script, some very clever new songs and a cast of cabaret glitterati (they should salt the set because they’re thoroughly chewing it right before your delighted eyes). Every character on the stage was totally in their performance moment and directed to close to perfection by James Luzar.
AND there’s a role Sidney Myer was born to play … you can only imagine. Over-exaggerated in a good way—well, Lisa Ellex says My Ex Husband’s Funeral is based on a true story! For those of you who remember 1977’s hilariously chaotic Gemini with it’s classic lines, “take human bites” and “I’ll just pick,” well, by the end of the show My Ex Husband’s Funeral likewise becomes so surreal that it feels like you’re watching a live cartoon on stage … a pastiche tour de force with its own classic line: “Enjoy the chaos because most of life is boring!”
