Marilyn Maye brings us a special springtime encore of her wildly popular Marilyn by Request show in June.
The fun-for-all format, in which her fans help pick her set list, lights up the Metropolitan Room for three nights only — Wednesday, June 14; Friday June 16; and Saturday, June 17, all at 9 pm.
Now a Metropolitan Room staple that usually kicks off the New Year, Marilyn by Request is no less demanding than her themed shows. The kick-up-her-heels format insures that every show is different. For many it is a source of pure astonishment to watch Maye turn a room full of strangers into a packed house of fast friends. Many in the audience are regulars who see all of Maye’s shows when she is in New York.
Maye has performed over 20 engagements at Metropolitan Room. This also marks the 11th anniversary of Maye’s debut at the club, in October 2006. She virtually christened the Metropolitan Room in its first year when she returned to New York for the 2006 Cabaret Convention after a 15-year hiatus. (Her first of many extended runs at the Met was in March 2007.) Since then Maye has won every award imaginable, including five consecutive Celebrity Awards from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs, and, in 2014, their Lifetime Achievement Award. Best of all, Maye has electrified a whole new generation by introducing them to a free-wheeling American nightclub performance style for which Maye really has no peer. Her master classes are thriving and successful as she imparts to other performers her beliefs and techniques of “The Art of Performance.”Maye is accompanied by her world-class trio led by Tedd Firth on piano (Jeff Harris on 6/17); bassist Tom Hubbard (Steve Doyle on 6/16, 6/17), and drummer Eric Halvorson.
“We love that Marilyn launched this current phase of her career at the Metropolitan Room,” says the club’s owner Bernie Furshpan. “This where she first electrified a whole new generation of fans, and we are proud that Marilyn always praises the intimacy and loving atmosphere of the club.”
The raves for Marilyn keep pouring in: In the last year alone she’s been called, “a phenomenon of nature” by The Clyde Fitch Report, and “show business personified” by TheaterMania, which added that, “she is still one of the most exciting acts in cabaret.” TheaterPizzazz observed that, “the one and only marvelous Ms. Maye can do no wrong. One day she has to sing the telephone book to prove it!”
She’s received the Legend Award from the Society for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook. Just days before her Met Room dates, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the CabaretFest! Association of Provincetown, MA, where she appeared at The Art House for her seventh consecutive summer.
The Kansas City native holds the singers’ record for appearances — 76 — on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. She was a Best New Artist Grammy nominee in 1965.
