The New Year begins at Dizzy’s Club with drummer-composer Jeff “Tain” Watts’ 65th birthday celebration, running from Thursday, January 2 – Sunday, January 5. The multi-Grammy winner and Guggenheim fellow leads an all-star band of Ravi Coltrane, saxophone; Paul Bollenback, guitar; James Francies, piano and James Genus, double bass.
Watts initially majored in classical percussion at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University, followed by enrollment at the Berklee School of Music and then a stint with the Wynton Marsalis Quartet from 1981 through 1988. He has also worked with George Benson, Harry Connick. Jr. and McCoy Tyner, as well as the Branford Marsalis Quartet. He has also appeared as both a musician on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and as an actor in Spike Lee’s Mo Better Blues.”
