Birdland Theater presents New York-based, Honduran-American violinist Marissa Licata on September 13 at 8:30 PM. In this New York solo concert debut, Licata will present Strings on Fire featuring her all-star band: Jerry Sabatini on trumpet, Matt Marcus on piano, John Miller on bass, Shannon Ford on drums and special guest James Montgomery on harmonica and vocals.
Strings on Fire explores rhythms and sounds from around the globe, mixing traditional folk music from Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, with improvisations by Licata and her group.
Licata has collaborated and performed on national and international tours with Alicia Keys, Jethro Tull, Wyclef Jean, H.E.R., Ben Harper, Ringo Starr, K. Michelle, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Gloria Estefan, Pras of the Fugees and many more. Her major TV appearances include “Good Morning America,” “The View,” “The Latin Grammys,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The BET Awards.” She is active within the orchestral and chamber music scenes, guesting at chamber festivals throughout the Northeast and performing with the Boston Ballet.
Montgomery’s career spans six decades, including touring with Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, The Allman Brothers, Steve Miller, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King and a host of others. He has also played with greats such as Patti LaBelle, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, James Taylor, Buddy Guy and countless others. Montgomery has been a member of The Blues Brothers with Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi, the Commander Cody Band and did a six year stint with the Johnny Winter Band. Montgomery was featured alongside Morgan Freeman and Willie Nelson in Delta Rising, a documentary about the roots of the Blues; Horn from the Heart, the Paul Butterfield documentary; and the WBCN documentary, The American Revolution.
