Celebrate the 100th birthday of jazz legend Kenny Dorham in a special three-night event at Dizzy’s Club—Friday, August 30, Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1—hosted by trumpeters Bruce Harris and Joe Magnarelli. Sets are 7 PM and 9 PM on Friday and Saturday, and 5 PM and 7:30 PM on Sunday.
Dubbed the “uncrowned king” by jazz great, leader and drummer, Art Blakey, Dorham’s genius as a trumpet player, composer and arranger will take center stage in these performances.
Dorham was one of the most active trumpeters of the bebop era. Early in his career, he played in the big bands of Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie and Mercer Ellington, as well as in Charlie Parker’s quintet. He was a charter member of the original cooperative the Jazz Messengers, led by Blakey. Dorham led his own groups, including the Jazz Prophets. Born on August 30, 1924, Dorham suffered from kidney disease in his final years, from which he died at agge 48 on December 5, 1972.
