Singing shrink, German-born Kat Rothe, performs at The Green Room 42 on Saturday, February 4 at 9:30 PM with Come to the Katberet Soirée! Composer and pianist Richard Pearson Thomas is on the keys.
I’m damaged. You’re damaged too. So why shouldn’t we join forces to see how much more damage we could do? (from Damaged by Richard Pearson Thomas). Around this refrain Rothe invites you to join her on a queer and stormy journey on the high seas. On the ship, you’ll meet fascinating characters from Weill’s Pirate Jenny to Handel’s Ruggiero—and of course Kat of the Beret herself, who will tell many a tale of the troubled waters of love, lust and loss, illuminated by her forays into the deepest reaches of the psyche. Rothe’s music encompasses pieces by Kurt Weill, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, George Friederic Handel, William Bolcom, Marlene Dietrich and Richard Pearson Thomas himself, sung in the many languages of the heart.
Rothe began as a student of music and theater in her native Germany and then went on to become Katharina Rothe, Ph.D., a New York City-based clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst and psychosocial researcher. Her passion for the stage, has, however, been unabated. She has performed in Berlin as well as at Opera America and Don’t Tell Mama in New York.
Richard Pearson Thomas has had works performed by the Boston Pops, Covent Garden Festival, Houston Grand Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Portland Opera, Banff Centre, Skylight Opera Theatre and Riverside Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. His songs have been sung in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, Joe’s Pub and the U.S. Congress. He is on faculty at Columbia University Teachers College and has taught at Yale.
