Fresh from music directing in Mandarin for Nederlander Worldwide in China, Juilliard graduate Matthew Liu makes the leap from orchestra pit to the spotlight in a Green Room 42 debut on Friday, January 7 at 9:30 PM. Who’s Matthew Liu??? also features Julia Meadows, with Xu Cheng on piano. Music direction and arrangements are by Liu.
In addition to his original songs, “Gaysian” Liu takes on pop music and stories about being a bit too Chinese for America, a bit too “colorful” for China, too cabaret for conservatory and just enough of all of them to be a lot of fun.
At age 12, Liu passed the Royal Academy of Dance ballet examination and by 17 had orchestral work premieres at both Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall and Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium. Now 25, he’s written five musicals, nine more orchestral works and over 30 chamber music pieces. He also plays 10 musical instruments. He is active in the musical theater scene as music director, conductor, orchestrator and vocal coach.
