The songs of Gary U.S. Bonds, whose hits remain an invitation to a party, will return to the Iridium on Friday, August 11 at 8:30 PM.
“Gary US Bonds is a highly-polished gem of Rock n Roll and was my favorite as a kid and still is! He knows how to throw a musical party second to none!” Scott Barbarino, Publisher, NiteLifeExchange
Bonds came roaring out of Norfolk, Virginia in 1960 with the hit, “New Orleans.” Attention was brought to the record by having promotional copies in sleeves inscribed “Buy U.S. Bonds—and so at age 19, Gary Anderson became Gary U.S. Bonds. The follow-up was the ‘party’ record, “Quarter to Three,” a number one hit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lists as one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
Over the next three years, Bonds co-wrote and recorded hit after good-time hit: ”School Is Out,” “School Is In,” “Dear Lady Twist,” “Twist, Twist Senora,” “Seven Day Weekend” and others. He performed throughout the world, headlining above a group of relative newcomers in 1963… The Beatles. He’s also been an inspiration to Bruce Springsteen, with whom he subsequently collaborated. The Grammy-nominated Bonds has also worked with Southside Johnny, Dickey Betts and Phoebe Snow, among others.
His success as a songwriter goes beyond his own Rock ‘n Roll and R&B hits. He has also garnered a nomination for the Country Music Association’s “Songwriter of the Year” for Johnny Paycheck’s “Friend Don’t Take Her, She’s All I’ve Got.” He is an honoree of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, an inductee of The Long Island Music Hall of Fame and a “favorite son” of the Blues Brothers.
