Billionaire David Geffen has pledged $150 million to the Yale School of Drama, a graduate program that enrolls about 200 students per year in theatrical studies including acting, playwriting, directing and design. The school will rename itself the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University.

The gift, which will be applied beginning this August, allows entry for those who cannot afford the $32,800 yearly tuition. Geffen’s generosity will mean it’s the second program at Yale to eliminate tuition, following the 2005 move to do so at the Yale School of Music.
Geffen made his fortune (estimated at around $10 billion) in the music and film businesses. He is a major philanthropist with an interest in the arts, previously giving significant funds to Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art, among others. He is no stranger to theater, having been a producer of Little Shop of Horrors, Dreamgirls, the upcoming The Music Man, and many others productions.
