Feinstein’s/54 Below presents The Second Act Series production of a one-night-only concert of the 1982 musical Charlotte Sweet (with music by Gerald Jay Markoe and words by Michael Colby) on February 27 at 7:00 PM. The event will be narrated by the original Charlotte, Mara Beckerman, who received one of the show’s three Drama Desk Award nominations in 1983, along with nods for the songwriters. Charlotte Sweet was featured in a display at Henri Bendel, courtesy of Geraldine Stutz (whose leadership of Bendel was hailed as transformative). Second Act Series principals are director Steven Carl McCasland and musical director/pianist James Horan. The evening. The complete Charlotte Sweet cast album was re-issued on CD in the spring of 2016 by JAY Records.
Set to star as Charlotte is Adrienne Eller, most recently seen in the National Tour of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. Joining her are Bethe Austin as Cecily MacIntosh, Justin Chevalier as Ludlow Ladd, Robert Cuccioli as Barnaby Bugaboo, Ellen Harvey as Katinka Bugaboo, Eddie Korbich as Harry Host, Alli Mauzey as Skitzy Scofield and Michael McCoy as Bob Sweet.
Charlotte Sweet is about an unusually high-voiced soprano, Charlotte, who because of her father’s debts, is forced to leave her Circus of Voices. The troupe of freak voices includes low-voiced Katinka Bugaboo, fast-voiced Harry Host, bubble-voiced Cecily Macintosh and Skitzy Scofield (with dual personalities and voices). John Corry in The New York Times said of the show, “It’s as if the Crummles from Nicholas Nickleby stumbled onto the set of Sweeney Todd. Mixes the adorable and the strange, and it is delectable. The glory is Mr. Colby’s lyrics.”
