Vocalist Dean Benner will be performing his fourth show at Don’t Tell Mama (343 West 46th Street) entitled Night Time Man on two Sundays: November 12 and 19 and showtime is 6:00 PM (doors open at 5:30 PM). Guest artist Christine Shuler has been in Dean’s last three shows. Richard Danley is the music director/arranger and plays the keyboards for the nights band, with these NYC: musicians: Matt Scharfglass on bass; Mike Campenni on drums; Jack Bashkow on reeds; Stephen Benson on guitar and Jonathan Russell on violin/fiddle. This fast-paced presentation can be described as “country cabaret” with songs as varied as country hits from Willie Nelson to American Songbook standards by Irving Berlin.
Dean was raised in rural Indiana, listening to many types of music, including those of his parents’ generation. After graduating from Notre Dame, and Loyola University of Chicago, he married his high school sweetheart, moved to New York in 1983, and raised three children. Dean spent the next thirty-plus years as a successful executive working for various Wall Street firms before retiring in 2014.
Dean always loved to sing ,but didn’t think about doing it more seriously until he met Linda Amiel Burns, Director of The Singing Experience in 2010. After participating in several performance workshops, he decided it was time to perform his solo cabaret act with Linda as the director and in 2011 his first show Nice ‘n’ Easy opened at Don’t Tell Mama. In 2013, country began to creep into his repertoire and Honky Tonk Man was his offering. In 2015 Still Cookin” was performed at The Triad with the Dean Benner Band.
