Cabaret, stage and film star Charles Busch will return to Theater for the New City in April with a showcase run of his new comedy The Confession of Lily Dare, directed by longtime collaborator Carl Andress (The Tribute Artist, Judith of Bethulia, The Divine Sister). The production will run April 4–29 at Theater for the New City’s Johnson Theater. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
The Confession of Lily Dare, celebrates the “confession film” tearjerkers of early 1930s pre-code cinema, such as The Sin of Madelon Claudet, Frisco Jenny, and Madame X. The piece tells the story of one woman’s passage from convent girl to glittering cabaret chanteuse to infamous madam of a string of brothels.
Previously at Theater for the New City, Busch created Cleopatra (2016), Judith of Bethulia (2012), and The Divine Sister (2010), which transferred to Off-Broadway via producer, Daryl Roth. In a statement Busch said, “For almost four decades Theater for the New City has been my artistic home. It’s the place where I began my career on the Lower East Side and each time I return I once more rediscover the sheer joy of creating theatre.”
The production will feature scenic and graphic design by B.T. Whitehill, costume design by Rachel Townsend (with costumes for Busch by Jessica Jahn), lighting design by Kirk Bookman, sound design by Bart Fasbender, and wig design by Katherine Carr.
