My latest photo journal captures moments from the encore performance of Turkish Rhapsody, featuring New York-based Turkish singer-songwriter, Can Yasar, on Tuesday, October 1st at Don’t Tell Mama. Multi-award-winning director Lennie Watts directed the show. Turkish Rhapsody featured a wide range of music, from Queen to Madonna to musical theater, and it concluded with an original piece written by Can. Multi-award-winning musical director Tracy Stark was supported by multi-MAC-award-winning bassist Matt Scharfglass , with percussionist Don Kelly.
Turkish Rhapsody was a powerful documentary of Can’s life and struggles as he made his way to America. Full of humor and passion, Can told his story to a captivated audience, who clung with appreciation to his every song! I loved every moment! It’s a beautiful show! If he ever brings it back, I highly recommend it!
And from NiteLife Exchange Publisher, Scott Barbarino: Can Yasar, with an incredible Broadway voice, delivered an amazing show about coming of age in New York City! The fact that he was born and raised in Turkey makes his story quite poignant.
The show is full of surprises and I don’t want to give anything away. I will say this: his hand gestures were so expressive I had to count his fingers to make sure he had just five. A must see performance! The team of director Lennie Watts and music director Tracy Stark have hit a proverbial home run with this one!
At the end of the show I asked Can to promise me that when he becomes a big star not to forget to return to give his gift back to the cabaret rooms.
