Peter and Will Anderson, identical twins and masters of the reed instrument, return to Symphony Space with their 12-show residency of Songbook Summit, from August 13 – 23. The Andersons shine the spotlight this year on the life and music of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, featuring video, narration, and performances from an all-star jazz sextet. The Andersons will be featured on saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), clarinets and flute.
The Andersons Play Duke Ellington (8/13 – 8/15, 5:30 & 8 pm nightly) presents the music of one of the most important and prolific American composers of all-time. Duke Ellington, who declared that he wrote “American music,” composed in many styles, eas ever-evolving and ultimately broke musical barriers, creating a distinctive compositional style. His well-known tunes “It Don’t Mean a Thing If it Ain’t Got That Swing,” “Mood Indigo,” “In My Solitude,” “In a Sentimental Mood” and “Satin Doll.” The program features vocalist Molly Ryan, pianist Jeb Patton, bassist Neal Mine and drummer Chuck Redd.
The Andersons Play Louis Armstrong (8/21 – 8/23, 5:30 & 8pm nightly) spotlights one of the worlds’ finest entertainers and jazz ambassadors. Louis Armstrong is remembered for his rhythmic inventiveness, dazzling trumpet solos and bluesy, humorous scat singing. Songs associated with Armstrong, especially from is early career, include “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue,” “Potato Head Blues,” “Swing That Music” and “Hello Dolly.” The show features Vince Giordano on string bass, bass sax, tuba and vocals, Jon-Erik Kellso on trumpet, Rossano Sportiello on piano and Paul Wells on the drum set.
