Cabaret stalwart Bennett Silverstein presents Just Sing on Saturday, May 18 at Don’t Tell Mama at 4 PM. Musical director is Matthew Martin Ward, with bassist Boots Maleson, and drummer Don Kelly. Jennie Litt directs.
Silverstein looks back on a 50-year legal career— and determines that, after all,
“There’s No Business Like Show Business.” For Silverstein, music was the road not taken. After a half- century career which took him from banking to the International Ladies Garment Workers Union to Workers’ Comp and the law, Bennett had a simple goal for his retirement years: JUST SING.
In the show, the singer takes us on a travelogue—via the F train—through his quintessentially New York life, with stops at City College, 44th and Broadway, ILG Union HQ and Don’t Tell Mama, with side trips to the Poconos and the Tamarack Country Club. Throughout this colorful journey, music is his constant companion and his one unfailing source of joy—and the promise of the little boy in his Bronx living room, singing along with Judy Garland, is finally fulfilled.
Cover is $20 (cash only), and there is a $20 food/drink minimum. Reservations are available at www.donttellmamanyc.com or by calling 212-757-0788 (after 4:00PM).
