The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director) in Long Island’s Babylon, begins the new year with the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, based on the play by Frank Wedekind, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater, music and orchestrations by Duncan Sheik, string orchestrations by Simon Hale, and vocal arrangements by Annmarie Milazzo. Performances begin Thursday, January 17, 2019 through Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Opening Night is Saturday evening, January 19, 2019 at 8:00 p.m.
Under the direction of Matthew Earnest with choreography by Sara Brians and music direction by Jonathan W. Brenner, the 15-member cast will feature David Cronin as Moritz, Corrie Farbstein as Wendla, Alex Joseph Grayson as Melchior, with Monica Bell as Adult Woman, Tyler Belo as Otto, John Anker Bow as Adult Man, Angel Harrison as Thea, Yamuna Meleth as Anna, Pat Moran as Hanschen, Emily Nash as Ilse, Townsend J. Pass as Ernst, Corey Ryan as Georg and Rose Van Dyne as Martha, Jamie Murray and Wes Williams.
The historic Argyle Theatre, recently renovated and rededicated, opened in Spring 2018 with the musical Guys and Dolls. The theatre will offer six annual main stage productions featuring performers from Actors Equity Association, the union for professional stage actors. The Argyle Theatre has a rich history of entertainment reaching back to 1921 when a newspaper article in the Babylon Leader announced plans for a “$100,000 Theatre for Main Street.” A 1923 playbill advertised daily performances ranging from vaudeville to adaptations of Broadway shows such as The Hero and East Side West Side.In 1925, the Suffolk County theatre re-opened under new ownership as the Babylon Theatre, delighting audiences with its many modern improvements including a flashy electric marquis. Throughout the following decades, the Babylon Theatre survived two fires and several different owners as it continued operating as a modern cinema house until 2014.
