The versatile Pearl Bailey (1918-1990) was part comedian, part actress and all singer, with the skill to talk through a song or sing it, delivering the message with canny ease. Will Friedwald’s Clip Joint – The Pearl Bailey Centennial Special, Monday, March 26 at 12 PM explores Bailey’s legacy through clips of her performances.
Pearl Bailey became a star in nightclubs, on Broadway and in movies, but really came into her own on television—in 40 years, Bailey was featured in hundreds of variety shows. Friedwald will present a rare range of clips of Pearlie Mae, as she was called, including with friends and supporters such as Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and her husband of almost 40 years, the noted jazz drummer Louis Bellson.
Will Friedwald is a feature writer for The Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair and the author of nine books on popular music. Friedwald presents curated video clips from his extensive vintage collection to illustrate the great artistry of the performers and composers of the American Songbook.
