The 92NY Lyrics and Lyricists™ season continues with a tribute to an incomparable singer, songwriter, pianist, composer, arranger and civil rights activist with Rebel With a Cause: The Artistry and Activism of Nina Simone. Featuring Tony nominee Amber Iman, the show plays from Saturday, December 7 to Monday, December 9 at 7:30 PM. The Sunday, December 8 performance is at 2 PM.
Music director-pianist Michael O. Mitchell created the orchestrations and arrangements. Tiffany Mann and Ines Nassara provide background vocals; Tony-nominated playwright Jocelyn Bioh is the narrative writer, with direction by Reggie D. White.
Rebel With a Cause offers jazz, classical, R&B, soul, gospel, blues, ballads, protest anthems, standards and swing, celebrating Simone’s legacy. In a band enriched with horns and strings, Iman will draw from the remarkable Simone songbook, which includes “I Put a Spell on You, “Feeling Good” and “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Plain Gold Ring,” “Mississippi Goddam” and “Backlash Blues.”
