The 92nd Street Y, New York annual Jazz in July series of six concerts, under artistic director, Aaron Diehl, begins on Tuesday, July 15 with an all-star lineup including Melissa Aldana, Terri Lyne Carrington, Aaron Diehl, Nicole Glover, Vanisha Gould, Lew Tabackin, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Marta Sánchez Quintet, Carlos Henriquez Nonet, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society and more.
This season’s festival includes big bands, the sounds and rhythm of Puerto Rico, and a concert celebrating two jazz legends. Opening and closing nights feature large ensembles in Kaufmann Concert Hall: The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra makes their first Jazz in July appearance, and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society – also making their first appearance – joined by Aaron Diehl. The intimate Buttenwieser Hall at the Arnhold Center showcases two mainstays of the city’s jazz scene in their Jazz in July debuts.

The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra – led by bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton – swings into NYC from LA for the first time in more than a decade to kick off Jazz in July with artists including Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Samara Joy and others.

Henriquez was recognized for his talent at just 14 by Wynton Marsalis, who has been a champion ever since. Along with his work with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Henriquez – the now-longtime bassist of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – has performed and recorded with music legends including Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Latin music giant Eddie Palmieri, Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés, and many others.
TENORS OF OUR TIMES–Sat, Jul 19, 7:30 pm

The lineup includes, Melissa Aldana, Chris Lewis, Walter Smith III, Lew Tabackin, Aaron Diehl, Yasushi Nakamura and Kush Abadey. The evening celebrates the tenor sax through a generation-spanning perspective across the decades, with salutes to past masters from Coleman Hawkins to Dexter Gordon to Sonny Rollins.

With Vanisha Gould, Nicole Glover, Aaron Diehl, Yasushi Nakamura and Terri Lyne Carrington, the ensemble honors Geri Allen and Mary Lou Williams, two of the most influential artists and creative forces in jazz. In their respective eras, each was a towering pianist, groundbreaking composer, and innovator with bold conceptions of what jazz could be.
MARTA SÁNCHEZ QUARTET–Wed, Jul 23, 7:30 pm

Spanish pianist and composer Marta Sánchez has become of the most compelling artists in global jazz. Her recordings consistently rank among the best jazz albums of the year in DownBeat and other key jazz media, and she tours regularly as a member of the David Murray Quartet in addition to dates with her trio and quintet.
DARCY JAMES ARGUE’S SECRET SOCIETY AND AARON DIEHL–Sat, Jul 26, 7:30 pm

Composer-bandleader Darcy James Argue’s 18-piece ensemble Secret Society reimagines what a modern big band can be. The ensemble joins Aaron Diehl for the world premiere of A Banquet for the Birds, Argue’s new suite for piano and jazz orchestra written for Diehl, and co-commissioned by 92NY and the NDR Bigband.
