RIP John Koprowski, Beloved Cabaret Performer and MAC Treasurer

An indefatigable supporter of cabaret and MAC treasurer, John Koprowski, died peacefully on Friday, December 15, at NY Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by friends. A cabaret performer and actor, he was a member of MAC and has been its long-time treasurer. Koprowski underwent heart surgery in June 2017 and never fully regained strength, shuttling back and forth between rehab and the hospital.

The biography below, from the MAC web site, is a comprehensive resume of his accomplishments. He will be missed by many who knew him as a colleague, presence in the business, and most of all as a friend.

JOHN KOPROWSKI (Treasurer) received a BS in Accounting from St. Peter’s College and an MBA in Economics from NYU. After two years working with the CPA firm of Deloitte & Touche, he received his CPA license. Upon leaving public accounting, John worked for twelve years with the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation in Brooklyn as the VP for Accounting and Information Systems. Subsequently in 1982, he joined the Ford Foundation, first as Comptroller and later as Treasure and Director of Financial Services.

In 1993 John left Ford to start a consulting firm, John J. Koprowski & Associates, working exclusively in the non-profit sector. The firm’s client list includes civil and human rights organizations, arts organizations, policy and advocacy groups, membership organizations and international capacity building groups. John was previously a board member of the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers. He also runs a part-time tax advisory and tax preparation service. As a member of the arts community, John has produced and performed four cabaret shows and has appeared at many clubs in the NYC area. As an actor, he belongs to the award winning Blue Coyote Theatre Company and has also appeared in and co-produced a number of shows with Without Papers Productions, a company that he co-founded. Recently, John was seen in several independent films, including The Third Testament, which has been presented at several festivals. John has been the Board Treasurer of the Singers Forum for over ten years and recently joined the board of the Astoria Performing Arts Center.

  1. I am saddened to learn of John’s untimely death. He was an integral part of Astoria Performing Arts Center’s board of directors and our long-time treasurer. An understated and very strong presence on our boar, John was always ready to do more than what was expected. He will be sorely missed.
