With re-imagined, re-invigorated arrangement ideas, Charlie Rosen’s 17-piece jazz orchestra, with Broadway talent singing/swinging on the bandstand. If you're ever way upstate, somewhere along the Mohawk River between Albany and Syracuse, I hope you catch The Bill Brust Band, who plays a weekly Friday happy-hour gig (5-8pm). This ensemble, consisting largely of transplanted Manhattanites, adheres to the old Count Basie credo, "take a good old tune and swing it." The Sprout Brook Country Store, off Route 163 in Sprout Brook, New York, is where it happens. The diverse musical backgrounds of the band's members makes for a highly combustable musical mix that ensures that unpredictability will collide with vIrtuosity to create a satisfying experience with equal measures of surprise and familiarity.

It scarcely seems possible that bandsinger Kat Gang, already poised to become one of the nation's most rapidly-rising stars of the jazz genre in her weekly appearances at the Plaza Hotel's Rose Club and the Algonquin's Oak Room, among many others, could have possibly improved even further in just a few short months after proving herself a top-notch entertainer. But that is exactly what has taken place since establishing her alliance with musician Nate Mayland. And if their recent CD Release Party at Iridium (for their debut disc The Wishbone Project) is any indication of what the future holds for these two as well as their additional backing combo, it's safe to assume that they will soon emerge as the definitive new "Bright Young Things" of the nightlife circuit.

Sometimes it only takes one song –or just a few bars of one—to KNOW. My brain went “ZING!” when I first heard the commanding Devin Bing. He was in a showcase at Metropolitan Room where he’ll be appearing this Frida,y May 10 in one of his monthly gigs there with his band. Devin Bing and The Secret Service will keep the spring and summer ULTRA COOL. Their blend of hip, jazzy sly and slinky music often infused with (but not confused by) energized force is as appealing as the mix of fierce and/or fun original songs with the standards of yore given new coats of musical paint: lusty, lush, languid or mellow-melancholy-melisma-melting. Stir well and serve.

Back by popular demand, Bria Skonberg left the crowd breathless with her performances at The Iridium last Sunday. As soon as she started her set, she welcomed the audience as if we were all old friends. Soon enough she began to play and impressed us all with her ability to flawlessly switch between playing her trumpet to singing her heart out during each and every song. And her band was not far behind. The pianist Ehud Asherie, swiftly moved along melodic lines as bassist Kelly Friesen played with his unique slap bass style and percussionist Roland Guerrero and drummer Jason Brown followed perfectly in time.

On April 12, 2012, Jack Kleinsinger presented jazz saxophonist Sonny Fortune with a “Highlights in Jazz” musical achievement award. The evening was a celebration of Sonny’s music, featuring an outstanding band, made up of: Sonny Fortune on alto and soprano saxes and flute; Lou Soloff on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, George Cables on piano, Buster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums and Steve Berrios on congas. The concert took place at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, ManhattanCommunity College.
