Kara_JohnstadAn American expatriate now living and brilliantly concertizing in Germany as well as other countries across the continent and in Asia, chanteuse Kara Johnstad may well be the single greatest surprise to hit the cabaret-jazz spectrum since Randa McNamara, over two decades ago. Her show Le Grand Love at Metropolitan Room, a tribute to legendary composer Michel Legrand, is so exquisitely and seamlessly assembled that she miraculously revitalizes a plethora of pop standards written by the gentleman, and the result is, in a word, masterful.

Stritch_Caruso_and_VannatterHave you heard about the big hit The Provincetown Cabaret Fest 2010 was yet? If not, you will. Ok, so maybe you missed it this year, but here's why you might want to think about booking a room early for next year.

Let me “name drop” (as Jim Caruso loves to say) to keep your interest: Jim was there, as was Billy Stritch, Dane Vannatter, Krisanthi Pappas, Carol O'Shaughnessy, Bobby Wetherbee, and many more.

Bistro_AwardsYou say Bis-troh, the French say Bee-stroh, let’s call the whole thing LONG…Now, is it Bis-troh or is it Bee-stroh? There were varied opinions expressed last night, but Rex Reed’s was the best, “Go to France and say Bis-troh and you’ll get slapped.”

The Bistro Awards ceremony is 25 years old, and since it’s my first time attending I didn’t know what to expect. It didn’t start well. The event started well over 30 minutes late, due to the evident lack of a proper seating plan. Even though I had reservations with a table number, that table was already full and I was left standing until the 4th awardee went on. I can forgive that – it happens. What I cannot forgive is almost 4 hours of speeches.

Ricky__Ritzel"The Show Must Go On" is a show business mantra I have espoused during my fifty odd (very odd) years in Cabaret. It has always been my advice to performers in times of bereavement, that life goes on, that work is the answer. But never have I heard an expression of emotion at the loss of a loved one handled better than by master performer Ricky Ritzel, in a poignant moment in his comic/singer/pianist act at Metropolitan Room last week.

Joshua_WarrOver two decades ago, cabaret saw the debut of a brilliant young male vocalist named Rohn Seykell, at the Duplex, when it was still located at 55 Grove Street. He was, in a word, electric; whether he was dazzling the audience with such songs as "Straw In The Wind" and Don McLean's "Vincent," he was equally at home with the American Songbook and an ingenious self-written parody of Cole Porter's "You're The Top." Since then, and even in the wake of other very prominent debuts in the genre by young gentlemen, this has almost never been topped and certainly not with such potent fervor. That is, until 2010 MAC Award nominee Joshua Warr took the stage at the Laurie Beechman Theatre with such potential star power that it almost obliterated cabaret history up to that point.

Joyce_BreachJoyce Breach and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett’s opening night was soooooo good I went back again on Friday, and it was even better.

Joyce is at her best with the brilliant Richard playing for her. His talent and presence add a great deal. She is a singer who gets every thing out of a song that the composer and lyricist intend. So many Jazz and Cabaret singers these days are either vocally adept and sing for sound alone or are talented actresses who reach the heart of a lyric without getting to the soul of the music. This lady faults neither component but gives us full measure every time.

Terese_GeneccoAs a part of Under The Covers, the New York Nightlife Award winning series produced by Lennie Watts, Terese Genecco sings this ground-breaking album from start to finish, in a groundbreaking live performance, accompanied by Musical Director Sean Harkness on the guitar! From the lilting blues – ballad arrangement of "Blue Suede Shoes" to the rocking "Just Because," Ms. Genecco presents Elvis' self-titled first album, Elvis Presley (recorded in 1954, 1955 and 1956), track by track, with a twist – every song is sung to a different beat than the original.

Beatnik_CafeIn the most unlikely of places, (a Murray Hill housing development) the heart of the Beat Generation was recreated by intertwining it with authentic bebop jazz running from 1940’s to 1960’s. Presented and narrated by Namaya, “the jazz poet,” the most interesting thing was the presence of the alleged leader of the Beat Generation (although he disagreed with that categorization), Jack Kerouac.  Featuring the vocal bebop Goddess, Sheila Jordan and Lillie Bryant, (a soulful recording artist of the 50’ and 60’s) we were blessed with folks who were actually present during the era.

Lend_Me_A_TenorStanley Tucci’s directorial debut of Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor at the Music Box Theatre, provides all the farcical belly laughs it can muster in this first Broadway revival. Is it all perfectly cast? No, but bottom line – who cares!  When Italian opera singer Tito Merelli (Anthony LaPaglia) arrives at a Cleveland, Ohio, hotel suite set in 1934, for a one-nighter at a small community theatre gala, he is already suffering from the effects of over-eating and drinking,

Elizabeth Sullivan photo by Russ Weatherford                                                                                                   This week, our Cabaret Pick is Elizabeth Sullivan on Sunday. She’s a lady who celebrates her birthday during this week, too (May 22). She’s a graceful, dignified, full-of-heart performer and a thoughtful, artful songwriter who does not shy away from real feelings. Whenever I see her perform, it’s a tenderly tendered mix of smile-inducers and tear duct activation.
