On January 15th, at Stage72 (formerly The Triad), Sammy Cahn's disciple, Fernand Gabrielli, will present his personal tribute to his friend and mentor, who died 20 years ago on that very same date. Gabrielli comes from Paris specifically to do this show featuring 21 songs with lyrics by Cahn. He will be accompanied by the veteran Russ Kassoff (former pianist of Liza Minnelli and Frank Sinatra). The special guest is Steve Ross, who will perform three numbers and then a couple of others with the host.
Sammy Cahn is the only lyricist ever to win four Academy Awards plus one Emmy. That was for "Love and Marriage," from the TV musical version of Our Town starring Frank Sinatra, for whom he wrote lyrics from the 1940s until the 1980s. Many of those will be featured in the evening of lyrics by Cahn, who was writing until the end of his life, at age 79. Also included among Gabrielli's performances will be "It's Crazy," written in 1991 with Artie Butler. The program will cover all the periods of Sammy Cahn's illustrious career, from the 1930s to the 1990s.
Here are some of the gems written by Sammy Cahn with composers Jimmy Van Heusen, Jule Styne, Saul Chaplin, Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl, Gene De Paul and Nicholas Brodzsky, among others:
