Kevin Scott Hall, who continuously played the cabaret circuit in New York and elsewhere from 1986-2004, as a performer, songwriter, recording artist and director, returns to celebrate his golden birthday with two shows only at Don't Tell Mama, Wednesday, July 18 (7pm) and Saturday, July 21 (6pm). Hall will reunite with one of his longtime collaborators, Clare Cooper, who serves as musical director, as well as Steve Marks on bass, Bernice Brooks on drums and Alex Bertrand-Price and Allison Mickelson singing backup vocals.
Hall, never one to be pigeon-holed, will sing a few old favorites and many new selections, including standards, pop, R&B and rock. Featured songwriters are as eclectic as Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh, Alanis Morrisette, Paul Simon and Stephen Schwartz, among others, plus Hall will perform a recent song by Grammy-winner Julie Gold. Also, he will tell both hilarious and poignant stories, including an update on his famous brush with violent crime in 1994, a story that made headlines again as recently as last year.
During his performing career, Hall released three recordings, New Light Dawning (1998), Holiday Spirit (1999) and Live at Middle (2002), the first of which received national airplay. He also dabbled in stand-up and performed in regional and local theatres.
In the years since he last graced the nightclub stage, he has continued to teach the art form and has also been a journalist for Edge Media Network. For that publication, he writes a monthly "Kevin on Kabaret" column and additionally has interviewed top tier talent such as Dionne Warwick, Betty Buckley, Bebe Neuwirth, Jon Secada, Nick Adams, Linda Lavin, Melissa Manchester, Nile Rodgers, and dozens more. He also serves on the board and reviews for the prestigious Bistro Awards Committee.
Hall is on the adjunct faculty at two City University of New York campuses and published his first novel, Off the Charts!, in 2010, a dark satire about the music industry. He is currently seeking an agent for his second book, a memoir.
