Drag Legend Sweetie’s Life Celebrated

Sweetie, one of the true greats of New York City’s drag scene passed away Tuesday, March 28th after a brave three-year battle with cancer. Originally given a grim diagnosis of three months, she beat those odds and had been performing until just a week before her passing. Irrepressible, she was born Daniel Booth, and started her career as a trained actor before becoming an icon of the nightlife scene as a key player at Jackie 60 and other legendary parties. Eventually she produced many of her own parties, including the long-running variety show Cheez Whiz, which ruled Sunday nights at The Parkside Lounge in the late 1990s. “Sweetie was a great entertainer with a warm heart, a truly beautiful person with glamour all the way!” said fellow performer China.

Her movie credits included playing the pageant hostess in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and a feisty hooker in RuPaul’s indie flick Starrbooty. On stage, she portrayed a grand drag diva in Tarrel Alvin McCraney’s Off-Broadway hit Wig Out!

Friends gathered on Sunday, April 2nd at Pangea 178 2nd Ave, New York, NY from 2 to 4 PM and then the celebration of her life  continued at Eastern Bloc 505 E 6th St, New York, NY where there was a screening of one of the films she was featured in.
