BOCA BLACK BOX is proud to present vocalist CHARLIE ROMO, for one night only, Friday, October 20, 2017 at 8pm. He will be accompanied by the Tom Regis Quartet. Charlie Romo is a native New Yorker & grew up in a community & a family with strong character, which has reinforced in him a style that has served him on stage. He studied music at Wagner College & has performed on the same stage with Usher, Lee Roy Reams, Chita Rivera &
Ben Vereen at both The Friars Club & the internationally acclaimed Metropolitan Room in NYC.
Charlie is in his 20’s & yet totally confident, comfortable & at home on both small & very large stages. He has an avid passion for the popular standards from the 1950’s & 1960’s & revives the music & style of a previous era in a dynamic & refreshing way, with the soul & sound of cherished legends, from Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra & Tony Bennett to Elvis Presley, Dean Martin & Bing Crosby. He brings back the romance, flair, subtlety & the longing of the music that played through a smoky, satiny generation of courtship, club-going & dancing.Charlie was a finalist in the 2017 NYC MAC Award for Best Male Debut Artist & was the recipient of Broadway World’s 2016 Best Debut Show.
What the critics have said about Charlie Romo…
“Charlie’s youthful energy & enthusiasm is engaging. With youthful enthusiasm & free-spirited gusto, Charlie practically levitates from the stage, working the room with a canniness well beyond his youth!” Marilyn Lester, Cabaret Scenes
“The unquestionable reality is that this young man really does have the level of talent necessary to become a big star!” Christopher M. Struck, Applause! Applause!
“This young man is a natural entertainer – by personality & practice. His voice is powerful & solid, the pace was crisp & the energy was high.” Fred Cohen, WomenAroundTown.com
“When I heard the opening notes of ‘Beyond the Sea,’ I closed my eyes & found myself in a dream: I was hearing Bobby Darin live. Brilliance that touches the soul can, apparently, result in tears of joy. Charlie Romo does something entirely different: he turns back the clock. He doesn’t imitate. He embodies. He doesn’t perform ‘as.’ He ‘is.’ In fact, Charlie is a kindred spirit among the performers he adores!” Lisa Joy Reitman-Dob, Theater Pizzazz
“He not only melts the hardest of hearts with his endearing, boyish smile, but when the crooner belts out a tune, his engaging, mellow tones not only impress — but bring his audience back to the big band era, when the epitome of romance & sophistication was running rampant & ballroom dancing was all the rage!” Carol Ann Benanti, Staten Island Advance
“Charlie Romo’s unique & recognizable renditions of popular standards are all audience pleasers. His captivating body language & pitch-perfect technical brilliance reveal he is a fresh, new, exciting talent we feel honored to have seen perform at the very beginning of what promises to be a long & successful career!” Thomas Robert Stevens, Applause!
